Protecting Yourself from Phishing

Phishing, Spear phishing, whaling these might bring to mind a sunny day on a summer weekend on a boat somewhere, but they should cause an alarm to go off in your mind.

Phishing is one of the most effective and widely used methods of cyber-attacks on businesses.

This technique has been changing and advancing quite rapidly to counteract the defense’s and training that companies have put in place to combat these types of attacks. We have gone from simple scam emails to full blown social engineered emails and convincing executive impersonation.

Recently there has been a phishing campaign against large IT companies including Wipro, Infosys, Cognizant. They targeted these types of companies in particular due to the fact that they work with many third-party partners and that relationship can be exploited to steal egiftcards. In one instance it is believed that the hackers were able to make of with over 11 million dollars’ worth of egiftcards.

Now it’s not clear yet what these companies use in terms of email security but if we go off what seems to be the boiler plate security that many large companies use they were left incredibly exposed to a wide variety of phishing attacks. Email security has evolved with phishing attacks and needs to be upgraded in many companies across the country. It is no longer enough to put up some firewalls and basic encryption coupled with basic security awareness training to deter these attacks. Intelligence is becoming increasingly important when it comes to deterring and adapting to threats.

New capabilities such as anti-phishing, anti-malware, attachment detonation, and impersonation protection have intelligence fed to them to stay up to date on current threats. These upgrades in the email protection industry increase your chances of stopping a phishing attack exponentially as well as moving your end users further away from contact with these malicious emails which is a huge factor because they are also your greatest liability when it comes to cyber security especially phishing attacks. If you want to keep your business safe you need to adapt as the hackers do to gain the edge on you and exploit it.

Lucky there are a number of quality companies out there that offer cutting edge defenses to the modern email phishing threat.
